Contexto
This English language subject tries to bring together the knowledge that the learner has gained in other subjects included in the Aerospace Engineering degree in their fist and second year by guiding them toward being able to express those ideas and concepts appropriately in English. The subject feeds from the content in other subjects as the foundation to practise and reinforce the learner's productive skills, as well as his or her comprehension sills in English. Attention is paid to conducting research, learning to present arguments convincingly and to effectively express ideas and concepts in written and spoken form.
Descripción
The subject is based on a communicative approach to language learning within the area of English for Specific Purposes (ESP). The vocabulary will therefore relate, in as far as possible, to the field of aerospace engineering. All 4 linguistic skills will be practised, i.e., listening & reading comprehension and speaking & writing, at a B2 level (upper intermediate) as described in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages published by the Council of Europe (http://www.coe.int/t/dg4/education/elp/elp-reg/Source/Key_reference/CEFR_EN.pdf). This level implies that the student can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. S/he can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. S/he can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
Evaluación
Formative and summative assessment throughout the semester. Students may retake any of the evaluation activities carried out throughout the semester. Oral examination/defense: Students will be requested to record and upload prompted audio files to their Drop Box in Poliformat. These audio files will be based on the MOOC content. Academic work: Students will be requested to conduct a debate project throughout the semester and carry out the actual live debate at the end of the course. Written test: Students will be requested to report in writing their research and the script for the debate project. This written text will be assessed individually despite the task being a group activity. Formula applied in PADRINO2: ($B*0.30)+($C*0.30)+($D*0.40) where B = oral examination/denfense above (MOOC content) where C = written test above (MOOC content) where D = academic work above (participation in debate project)
