Contexto

This subject focuses on technical English relating to aerospace engineering and aeronautics. It provides basic knowledge in English about aircrafts and aircraft manufacturing. It presents the vocabulary and language forms used in English to talk about aircraft structures, components, their functions, and design. The technical content focuses on the manufacture, assembly, and preparation (including cabin layout and configuration) leading up to flight. Considerable attention is paid to the principles of flight, aerodynamics, and some attention is paid to avionics. This subject therefore introduces basic concepts that will subsequently be studied in other subjects in the aerospace engineering degree in greater depth.

Descripción

The subject is based on a communicative approach to language learning within the area of English for Specific Purposes (ESP). The vocabulary therefore will relate, in as far as possible, to the field of aerospace engineering. All 4 linguistic skills will be practised, i.e. listening & reading comprehension and speaking & writing, at a B2 level (upper intermediate) as described in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages published by the Council of Europe. For further reference see: http://www.coe.int/t/dg4/education/elp/elp-reg/Source/Key_reference/CEFR_EN.pdf. This level implies that the student can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. S/he can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers possible without strain for either party. S/he can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Evaluación

Formative and summative assessments will take place throughout the semester. Students may retake any of the evaluation activities carried out throughout the semester. Oral examination/defense: This will have a weight of 15% per exam or oral presentation, i.e. 15% x 2 = 30% The project consists of a semester-long storytelling project, i.e. creating a digital story (video), i.e. 40% Written test: students will perform an online test using the Poliformat testing facility (15%) and they will also conduct a written exam consisting of one of the topic referred to in the text book "Ready for take-Off" (15%), i.e. 15% x 2 = 30% Formula applied in PADRINO2: ($B*0.30)+($C*0.40)+($D*0.30) where B = oral examination/defense (book content) where C = project (digital story) where D = written test (book content)
